Where French immersion meets academic excellence!

A dual-language immersion program based on the French Ministry of Education curriculum

French School of Austin – or Ecole Jean-Jacques Rousseau – is a private, independent, bilingual school for students from preschool to Grade 8.

Located in North Austin, French School of Austin has given students a bilingual preparatory education since 2005. The school offers a multicultural, multi-language learning environment where instruction is given in French and English, with an optional third language track in Arabic, Spanish, or Mandarin.

The school curricula are based on the guidelines of the French Ministry of Education and the Texas Education Agency, while supplemented by the essential elements advanced in American private-school education. By the end of middle school, this dual approach produces academically-adept, bilingual students, proficient in both English and French and a third language.

The preschool French curriculum is not only hands-on, it is also art based, most specifically “process art” based. Process art is an open-ended art activity that focuses primarily on having the children involved in the process of creation. Process art is an alternative to “product art,” wherein the focus is on each child creating the same basic craft modeled after a sample. As the names suggest, one is about the creative process, and one is about the final product. Studies and experts have proclaimed that process art is the most developmentally appropriate art activity for preschool-age children. These young children are building their background knowledge of everything they encounter, even craft supplies. Through process art, children get to really explore what paint is, what it does, how it feels, how it works, and what they can do with it. Process art allows preschoolers to gain hands-on knowledge of how art works, and to be more involved in the creative process, giving them pride in what they create. Here, in the curriculum domain of “Act, express yourself, understand through artistic activities”, Petite Section class is creating their version of the Three Little Pigs Houses in two art sessions using paint, collage et material representing “wood”, “straw”, and “bricks”.
